Westport Beach House

On the location of an old bungalow, the JHL team designed a new residence that would take advantage of this unique site and that would respect the character of the neighborhood around it. The house shares the original footprint with this earlier house, however increases the useable square footage by almost 75%, creates a more functional floor plan, and allows for the house to be used year round.

The house is designed to relate to the coastal New England cottages that populate Elephant Rock, with its general forms scale, and materiality relating to many of the surrounding dwellings. 

 

With the land directly in front of the property held in perpetual trust as town owned and protected, the house is designed to offer views of the ocean from most rooms in the house. From the initial concept, these views influenced large parts of the design.
